Vietnamese Family Shelter – Episode 165: Orphaned of both parents, two sisters rely on their elderly grandmother, leaving Huynh Lap in tears

Orphaned of both parents at a very young age, Ngo Quang Hiep and his older sister have grown up under the care of their elderly grandmother, whose health is increasingly frail. The exceptionally difficult circumstances of the two sisters deeply moved host Huynh Lap and guest artists Ha Le and Bui Le Man, who decided to accompany and support the children so they can continue their education.

Ngo Quang Hiep (born in 2012) is currently an eighth-grade student at Tan Huong Secondary School, Van Xuan Ward, Thai Nguyen Province. Hiep lost his father early in life, and his mother passed away when he was only four years old. Since then, Hiep and his sister, Ngo Thi Thu Thuy, have relied entirely on the love and devoted care of their maternal grandmother.

Hiep’s grandmother, Mrs. Hoang Thi Nhin (born in 1959), is advanced in age and in poor health, leaving her unable to work. The livelihood of the three-generation family depends solely on government allowances for orphans and caregiving support, totaling only about VND 3 million per month. The grandmother and her grandchildren must scrimp and save every day just to make ends meet.

Despite the hardship, the two sisters remain diligent in their studies and dream of attending school regularly in hopes of a brighter future.

In addition to managing household chores, Mrs. Nhin raises a few chickens for eggs and grows vegetables behind the house to improve meals for her grandchildren. Understanding the family’s situation, Hiep and his sister are obedient and undemanding, never complaining. Each morning before school, their meals often consist of cold rice or instant noodles to cut living expenses.

The two sisters actively help their grandmother with housework and care for her attentively whenever she falls ill. As Hiep grows older, he becomes increasingly worried about his grandmother’s declining health. To him, she is not only his pillar of support but also the only remaining family member. Hiep wishes to grow up quickly so he can work, earn money, and repay his grandmother, who has sacrificed her entire old age for her orphaned grandchildren.

Aware of the family’s difficulties, teachers at the school have created favorable conditions by providing free remedial classes for Hiep and his sister. Despite constant deprivation, Hiep remains hardworking, well-behaved, and respectful. He fears being forced to drop out of school due to financial hardship and only hopes that both sisters can complete their education. Hiep dreams of becoming a police officer in the future, to protect justice, maintain peace, and help the disadvantaged.

The plight of Hiep’s family, together with the image of an elderly grandmother tirelessly shouldering the burden of raising orphaned grandchildren, has moved many viewers to tears. Watching footage of his own family, Hiep broke down sobbing. Standing beside him, host Huynh Lap could not hide his emotion and concern for the grandmother’s health and the uncertain future of the two sisters as she grows older. What touched Huynh Lap the most was Hiep’s filial devotion: despite living in severe hardship, the boy only wishes to grow up soon to earn money and take care of his grandmother.

The two sisters take care of the household and share the burden with their elderly grandmother, whose health is frail.

Singer Bui Le Man repeatedly wiped away tears upon witnessing the early loss of parental love endured by Thuy and Hiep. The lack of both emotional and material support, combined with constant anxiety over their grandmother’s health while the children are still so young, deeply affected the singer.

Singer Ha Le continuously comforted Hiep, gently wiping away his tears. Seeing that there was no one strong enough to be the family’s main breadwinner, Ha Le decided to accompany and support the children. He committed to covering tuition fees, textbooks, and school supplies for both Thuy and Hiep through the end of Grade 12, helping them continue their education with peace of mind. He also hoped to help ease the burden of the devoted grandmother who has sacrificed her later years for her grandchildren.

At the studio, the two sisters cried uncontrollably as they spoke about their family circumstances, leaving the artists deeply moved.

After the challenges, the family of Vu Thanh Ngoc placed third and received VND 18 million; Ngo Quang Hiep’s family placed second with VND 22 million; and Nguyen Thanh Nam’s family won first prize, successfully completing a special challenge and taking home a total of VND 55 million. In total, Hoa Sen Group awarded VND 95 million to the three families this week.

In addition, singer Bui Le Man personally donated VND 5 million to each family. Beyond his long-term support for Thuy and Hiep, singer Ha Le also presented a special gift to each family. Together with host Huynh Lap, benefactors, and audience members in Hanoi, the two guest artists joined hands to contribute. It is estimated that the total support from the program, along with contributions from artists and benefactors for this week’s children, reached nearly VND 300 million.
